The Project Amber Framework Initiative - lcrig

The challenge of maintaining and repairing the UK’s road network is one faced by every local highway authority. With rising repair costs, shrinking budgets, and increasing public expectations, innovative solutions are needed to ensure road maintenance is cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable. This is where the Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) Project Amber Framework comes in.

Originally developed in Blackpool, Project Amber has now been adopted and expanded by the LCRIG to be accessible to every local highway authority in the UK. The initiative is designed to break down barriers to participation, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are often at the forefront of advancements in road maintenance techniques and treatments.

Project Amber is built on collaboration, innovation, and cost-effectiveness. It was developed following a series of trials in Blackpool, where 12 suppliers explored alternative approaches to road maintenance. The results demonstrated that by leveraging expertise and innovation, local authorities could achieve faster, more robust, and more cost-efficient road repair solutions.

Now, with the Project Amber Framework available nationwide, councils have the opportunity to rethink traditional approaches and embrace new, more effective methods of managing their highway assets.
